Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Estimator with a strong background in concrete construction to lead and manage the estimating department. The Chief Estimator will be responsible for overseeing all estimating functions, developing accurate cost projections, and ensuring competitive bid proposals for commercial, industrial, and public works projects. This leadership role requires deep expertise in concrete construction methods, materials, and industry trends, along with the ability to mentor and develop an estimating team.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Department Management:
  • Lead and manage the estimating team, providing guidance, training, and mentorship.
  • Develop and implement standardized estimating procedures, best practices, and cost-control measures.
  • Oversee the preparation of estimates for multiple projects, ensuring accuracy, competitiveness, and compliance with company goals.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop long-term business strategies, including target markets and pricing models.
Estimating & Cost Analysis:
  • Review and analyze project drawings, specifications, and contract documents to determine scope and bid requirements.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for concrete materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Evaluate and incorporate historical cost data, market trends, and productivity factors into bid strategies.
  • Identify project risks, cost-saving opportunities, and value engineering solutions to maximize profitability.
  • Ensure estimates are in line with industry standards and company objectives.
Bid Preparation & Proposal Management:
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of competitive bid proposals for commercial, industrial, and public works concrete projects.
  • Ensure bid packages are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Participate in bid reviews with executive leadership and present final estimates for approval.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients, general contractors, and public agencies to secure future business opportunities.
Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination:
  • Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key vendors to ensure consistent pricing and material availability.
  • Negotiate favorable terms with suppliers and subcontractors to enhance project cost efficiency.
Collaboration & Process Improvement:
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to develop accurate pre-construction plans and execution strategies.
  • Implement technological advancements in estimating software and data analysis to improve efficiency.
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance estimating processes to maintain a competitive edge in the industry.
Market Research & Industry Trends:
  • Stay informed on industry trends, material price fluctuations, and labor cost changes.
  • Monitor competitor pricing strategies and adjust bidding approaches accordingly.
  • Provide insights on market conditions and project feasibility to executive leadership.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in concrete estimating, including at least 5 years in a senior or leadership role.
  • Expertise in Concrete Construction: Extensive knowledge of foundations, formwork, structural concrete, tilt-up panels, site concrete, and paving.
  • Proficiency in Estimating Software: Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid, On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift, or similar platforms.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to review blueprints, project plans, and technical specifications to develop precise cost estimates.
  • Excellent Leadership & Communication: Ability to lead a team, coordinate with executives, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
